Mike,

IMHO there is another important issue: for almost a decade, we have been presented with "latest greatest coolest new technologies" whose data capabilities are backward. In such a situation, sometimes Stored Procedures are "obviously" the only way to go. Prophets then turn the necessity into a virtue in every case and for every development language. VFP has seen this numerous times- I think there are still wiki pages from five years ago involving people who remain adamant to this day that SP is the only viable option, despite numerous factual rebuttals.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
