In my previous employment, I had dual monitors which were not identical and also required two graphics cards. Currently I have one card which supports dual monitors (the single graphics card has a dongle cable) and the monitors are identical. Both are acceptable, but this configuration is ideal. Of course with the old configuration if one card went out then I still had a backup but that never happened.
I just realized you wanted brand recommendations as well. I like the Nview software but I don't have that now. I currently have the ATI RADEON X600 graphics card and two Dell 1707P Flat Panel Monitors (nice).
