I read it that he was mentally bankrupt of amusing, catchy superlatives, or had forgotten just how many times he used them.

Sound like I was right to avoid it.
BTW, this holiday I stayed in a camp-site in France called "Camping le Vorlen". With the French pronunciation I half expected my tent to be bulldozed :-)
