Hi,
The results you are getting are about right for this vintage of hardware, I would upgrade the hardware to the following:

CPU minimum 3.2Ghz P4 (Preferably a dual core)
Intel Chipset
1GB Ram (especially when manipulating this amount of data)
SATA HDD or Ultra320 SCSI (These are much faster than what you are using)
Windows XP SP2 (I also assume you are using W98 or W2K)
