I heard a few years ago of hand-held devices in Japan, that store your bio details, and love-life preferences etc., such that when coming into contact with another person with one of them, they would interrogate each other to see if you are compatible, and alert you if so. It's almost like telepathy.
I haven't heard of it catching on (or indeed ANYTHING more about it) in the hectic West. I'd imagine this would go down well in, say, Manhattan, and could be a useful adjunct to, say, speed dating, as a way of seeking a partner in these busy days.
