The reasonable resolution really depends on the screen size.
I find 800x600 best for 14" and 15" monitors, 1024x768 is better for a 17" monitor.
Note that in many developing countries, you are likely to find smaller screens; for example, I have a 17" monitor, but I am really in a minority in this aspect. 15" is standard nowadays. So, it really depends on your market. If you are programming for Canada, perhaps you can assume that most people will have larger monitors, but better do some more research.
