Can't connect to second instance of MSDE

You need to enable the network protocols of the msde they are disabled by default when you install it.

Have you got EM on the SQL box? If so right click on the instance of the MSDE Instance and click properties then Network Configuration. Ensure TCP\IP and or Named Pipes are selected as enabled protocols.

This should do it.
