I don't know what the majority of Kurds think - but I can sympathize with this:

The Iraqi Constitution provides for a new flag and national anthem, but parliament has been addressing more urgent legislation and has yet to discuss that provision. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered that all government offices continue flying the Saddam-era flag until parliament comes up with a new one.

Last week, a mini poll by AKI news agency showed that Barzani's flag decree welcomed by all Kurds in Kurdistan region (northern Iraq), Hoshiar Abed-Allah, 40, said the decision represented a challenge to the new Iraqi government. "We back president Barazani all the way on this courageous decision to reject this disgusting flag , under which the ugliest genocides against our people were carried out. we do not want an Iraqi flag in our Kurdistan even if it were the flag of the republic of Abed Alkareem Kaseem, because we do not want to live under the Iraq that made us go through tragedies and horror

Ideally, a new flag would be created which represents the new Iraq. That would probably cause more problems also though. Feelings run deep and loyalties as well. The flag is not something I can have an truly informed opinion on personally, because it is not my country.

I'm sure some Kurds simply don't want to fly the Iraqi flag because of the history with Saddam under that flag and what it represents. Some probably simply want to become a sovereign nation and see flying a Kurdish flag as the first step.

I think that should be up to the Kurds. However, I think most of the world sees a separate Kurdish nation as a problem and not the best solution for Iraq (or Turkey). I am not clear as to all of the political ramifications, but frankly, if Texas wanted to become its own country (and many Texans have wanted that for over 100 years), the U.S. would stop it. Yet, my personal opinion is that in a true democracy, the people decide their own future (as bad as that may be).
