A lot of Americans donated money (I for one) and many went there (my aunt and some of my friends did) to help with the cleanup, rebuilding, and support afterwards. Some at great personal sacrifice. Did you see that on tv as well?

Sadly, this doesn't account for private donations (which is how most Americans donate and may be the case in other countries as well):
