I thought you were going to recommend "But No Elephants". I took your recommendation on that when my daughters were little and they both liked it. Their all time favorite (when they were being read to rather than reading books themselves) was "The Paper Bag Princess". They knew the book by heart and would immediately correct me if I changed a word here and there to see if they were paying attention. There were two lines that they would anticipate and then laugh riotously at, no matter how many times they had heard them before. One was "The dragon didn't have enough fire left to cook a meatball." The other was "Ronald, you are a bum." Their little shoulders shook up and down with laughter.
