I saw President Bush say that on a news clip.

My first thought was that the President is stating a basic truth BUT he compared apples and oranges.

I think he is dead on that there is no "...comparison between the compassion and decency of the American people and...". But:
1) The Administration - which is how 'credibility with the world regarding the war on terror' is established - is not reflecting what I see/hear a majority of "the American people" supporting;
2) It is the Administration, and not "the American people", that has been caught in lie after lie and Constitutional breach after Constitutional breach and the fundamental component of "credibility" is TRUTH and JUSTICE.
3) Most glaringly, "credibility" is not the same thing as "compassion and decency".

Was it the Superman TV series that started out with the statement "Truth, justice and the American way"?
Assuming so, the people who are removing cigarettes from old films and historical photos will have to change the tapes to say "Truth, justice OR the American way".
