For me the real difference is that stars like Bacall, Bogart, Davis etc really were larger than life. Maybe it had to do with the fact that there were fewer tattle rags and magazines around to pry out every little nook and cranny of their lives. Although, I think it was more than that. You put Bogart and Bacall on the screen together, or Myrna Loy and William Powell, or Bogart, Lorre, Greenstreet and Bergman and it was like true magic. I don't see much of that around any more.
I should note that I'm only almost older than sand. I'm not quite old enough that these movies were first run when I was young. I'm just drawn to them. Same as the old music. I love the current jazz, for instance, but there is something about the music from the 20s and 30s that really gets to me - makes me wish I'd been there when it was being made.
