I'm not sure it is being Catholic so much as being a devout anything. Separation of church and state is a must in our country - although you wouldn't know it given our current administration. I don't think anyone really saw that coming though. Most Americans are leary of anyone with strong religious beliefs (to any single doctrine) being in the most powerful position in our government. Yet most feel that a belief in God is important. When a candidate claims up front their religious position and ties it to any single organization, it leaves no hope for any type of action in contradiction to that religion's beliefs or position. Most successful candidates will claim to be spiritual or religious, but not tied to any orthodox church and definitely not one known for controlling governments and countries in the past...
