But that's the substance of the stability of the system :). Generally, the party system (two-party even more so) makes sure your opinions don't get represented. You may agree with one party on 40% of the issues, 60% with the other, and you can be sure that when either one gets to power, they'll push exactly those that you don't agree with, and do little to nothing of those you liked.
You basically have no say in what your representatives should do, you only choose from which of the two they would be. Not enough choice; seems to be we have a sort of monopoly here, market divided between just two companies.
And with the two party system, everyone seems to think it's impossible to shake them down, to introduce a third party, third party would never get enough votes. So that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Everyone thinks third party would never make it because everyone thinks third party would never make it.
