I've been working with DNN for a couple of years now - there are some important steps to take when upgrading. There is an excellent tutorial here:

I have a paid subscription to this site - they have a ton of excellent resource videos for DNN. The latest 4.3.x versions of DNN have some great new membership functionality that I'm taking advantage of.

The only issues I've had when upgrading (and following the steps listed in the above link) - have been with 3rd party modules that haven't been upgraded to work with the latest code base of DNN.
