And when presented with hard facts, they'll pull up an example of the other side having done something similar 40 years ago.
Funny how the system actually works. If an accountant cooks the books, if an actor ruins his relations with producer etc - there's always a way to make the phrase "I'll make sure you never work as {occupation here} again" come true. Somehow there's nobody out there to make such a career change come true for a politician. They invariably become (or stay) rich enough after the scandal. If nothing else, they get a ghost writer and publish a book about it (or just sell the story to someone who will), and make money on the scandal itself.
