I did not set exceptions for any files but i think that it is done from the menu service-potentially unwanted programs exceptions, you can also set exceptions by extension, but again i don't use this feature. i have never liked mcafee due to a very bad uninstall experience years ago. i have only done excel automation since installing avg but this was no problem, and office files open much more quickly than they used to under NAV. Overall the interface is not as nice as NAV and i have had no cause to enter exceptions but i am very happy with the speed, it has given my laptop a boost.

Same here - I'm using the freebie AVG for years, and it just sits there silently and does its bit of update every night. Actually the update is when I know I should go to sleep - it's my oposite of alarm clock :).

And I haven't had any alarms ever since, nor have I noticed anything funny going on on any machine we have (apart from Windows themselves, but that's a different story). And the processor time it uses is really minimal.

For a while I had a company laptop with NAV on it, and it was eating up a lot, from what I can remember.

I've also read some horror stories on other message boards, about all the voodoo and other tricks needed to weed out previous versions of NAV before installing a new one. The process isn't for the faint of heart. Their upgrade procedure was one of the 99% of the roads to failure. Terry seems to have hit one of those.
