There is an update to the virus definitions once every weekday. Whether if in the free edition they delay those by a few days I don't know. If they do, it hasn't matter virus wise to my system.

I guess they are hoping that us techies will then recommend the pro version for our businesses.

We run Trend Anti-virus at work. Pretty good but everyone once in a while we get an infection and Trend can't clean the system, even after updating the defs. So far AVG has been used in every one of these cases to wipe out the virus. Unfortunately, I can't influence the anti-virus choice in our gigantic organization.
