I don't know anything about diamonds (besides that I need to find a 600+ct one for Tracy asap) but the reason for the importance is simply that in all the centuries of diamond mining, of the millions of diamonds that must have been mined worldwide, this is the 15th largest. I would say that is statistically significant and hence news worthy.
