>Somehow I have trouble with the fact that the 15th largest diamond ever found is big news. They are proud to be making history for the 2nd time? Making history? This is the 15th largest. At what point does it stop making history? 20th largest; 50th largest; 75th?

I don't know anything about diamonds (besides that I need to find a 600+ct one for Tracy asap) but the reason for the importance is simply that in all the centuries of diamond mining, of the millions of diamonds that must have been mined worldwide, this is the 15th largest. I would say that is statistically significant and hence news worthy.
