The UT home page has a link to a security article on Cnet (
http://news.com.com/2010-7349_3-6123924.html?part=rss&tag=6123924&subj=news). The article, by the Chief Scientist at McAfee, scolds Microsoft for introducing Patch Guard in Vista.
The arguement is that anti-virus software today can hook into the kernel and prevent a virus from hooking into the kernel. But Patch Guard prevents applications from hooking into the kernel. McAfee claims that users will be less safe in Vista because viruses can more easily get into the system.
Am I missing something here? If Patch Guard can prevent an anti-virus program from hooking into the kernel, it can also prevent a virus from hooking into the kernel. How are we less safe?
