But the BBLean is fine. Yes, it uses about 20M, but I've uncluttered my desktop (no icons!), and I actually got five desktops, plus a bunch of cool features. And it's much much faster.

So my winning combination is BBLean (blackbox.exe), Launchy and TotalCommander. Launchy is there for files I don't really run that often, so they don't have shortcuts anywhere. And I can still temporarily switch back to Explorer's desktop if I really want.
