You're right a reinstallation might not be the key. Actually my first installation of VS2003 was a real disaster and ended with a reformat/reinstall of everything!
When C..5 happens check details. Maybe just replacing the dlls in question might solve.
Viruses and virus scanners are always questionable.
It's a hard and painfull case:( Good luck.
