I thought the Nixon White House set the bar pretty high in terms of aspirations for an imperial presidency, of seeking to make the Executive branch the only branch of federal government that mattered. But they were pikers compared to the Bush administration. That Bush Inc. will be judged harshly by history is little comfort while they are still in office and still actively trying to subvert the most basic principles of our system of government. The recent drawing in The New Yorker of Dick Cheney's top legal aide, David Addington, feeding a copy of the Constitution through a shredder captured it perfectly.
