A few things for you to try:

1) set deleted off before you call your view and check performance

*-- experiment with index on deleted() or removing index on deleted()

2) related to part 1, check the optimization level of the query that produces your view

*-- enter this into command window
=SYS(3054,11,"jrush")

*-- enter your select statement and the info will display to your screen.
*-- anything that comes back none or partial may 'bog you down'
*-- remember to check set deleted when experimenting here also...

3) periodically sort the table using the most commonly used search field
