Terry,
may be I'm not up do date.
I have a clear remembrance of the road signs all the way from London to Ramsgate ferry port. (As far as they point to anything east of Ramsgate.) We have had a big laughter on it.
I do not really believe that it has to be read as "mainland". This sounds to peculiar to me.

Never mind. EC is talking about Turkey now. It's enough to be close in geographical therms. ::)

>If you refer to the UK, where are the roadsigns pointing to Europe? What would be the point? all the cars would just drive off the edge and into the sea. I live and work near to a ferry port; the only signs are to the ferry, not to Europe. Besides, any sign that *did* say "Europe" would be pretty useless: one would want to know to which country one was heading, not which bloody *continent" (pointless getting the ferry from Felixtowe - dest: Hook of Holland - if you wanted France). Similarly, in your own country a sign saying "To other parts of Europe" would be useless!

>Finally, if there were such a sign, then it would mean "Mainland" Europe
