may be I'm not up do date.
I have a clear remembrance of the road signs all the way from London to Ramsgate ferry port. (As far as they point to anything east of Ramsgate.) We have had a big laughter on it.
I do not really believe that it has to be read as "mainland". This sounds to peculiar to me.

Never mind. EC is talking about Turkey now. It's enough to be close in geographical therms. ::)

Besides, any sign that *did* say "Europe" would be pretty useless: one would want to know to which country one was heading, not which bloody *continent" (pointless getting the ferry from Felixtowe - dest: Hook of Holland - if you wanted France). Similarly, in your own country a sign saying "To other parts of Europe" would be useless!
