There may have been. But why was it infamous? It wasn't until there was talk of EU integration that we Brits were urged to think of ourselves as Europeans. Europe is still referred to as "The Continent", just as people living on a US/Canadian island might well call N. America "The Continent" (although I know that there are Americans who talk of a vacation on the Continent, meaning Europe).
Tell ya, I've heard of far more infamous broadcasts than that!
