In a different time, under different circumstances, I might agree. But while it is easy to agree with much of what you've said, I wouldn't want anyone's children to become fodder for an administration to throw out to the wolfs, as I believe they've done with today's military.

It's almost like a check and balance. History says there was a massive patriotic movement in this country during WWII. People are still very proud to say they are a WWII vet.

You haven't seen that effect from the Vietnam era. And you certainly won't see that effect from this Middle East conflict.

>On this forum anyway. I'm sorry. I just have a difficult time with this. I still believe very strongly that some type of service to your country should be mandatory. It doesn't have to be military service - it can be peace corps, civil service, anything. Most Americans take so much for granted it amazes me. Freedom is not free. Somehow it is changing to a country where everything should be given to us for free and nothing should be earned and no contribution given back. I'm at the point now where I think medicare and ss and every other government benefit should be withheld unless you serve your country for 2 years in SOME CAPACITY.

>>>That surprises me. I really didn't think you didn't trust your son's judgment? I see no other reason for opt out paperwork to be completed. Afterall, recruiters only present the options to kids, they cannot draft anyone. They cannot force anyone to do anything.
