Similarly I took, some time ago, advantage of collecting a few free firewalls together. I understand that it's not a good idea to have more than one f/w going at any one time - I might get an even smoother ride with just on - so, out of the following, a) is it better to choose one over the other or have tow on? b) which is more recommended?

I've been using Firefox (currently v1.5 as 2.0 is too new and a little buggy) and AVG for years. Couldn't be happier.
Firefox has tabs (best thing since sliced bread), and you can download excellent scriPots, one of which (IETab) allows you to tell the system to automatically switch to IE for sites that are not Firefox friendly (like some MS sites for example). WHat it does in those cases is instantiate an IE ActiveX in the tab seamlessly. Works like a charm. Should work too once I upgrade tpo IE7, which I have not played with yet.
