There's the argument right there, Sam (aside from the notion that the death penalty is barbaric)!!
You're confident, apparently, that appeals and time will successfully find judgement errors before the ultimate penalty is imposed. And I disagree.
There are a few reasons for this, including things like prosecutors often refuse to have their otherwise successful cases reviewed, and in most jurisdictions the cooperation of the prosecutor is mandatory. There are also often little laws or regulations that stand in the way, like refusal to accept witness recantations, deaths of witnesses, loss (accidental or otherwise) of evdence, etc. But most of all, how many appeals, or how much interest do you think remains, when the party involved has already been put to death? The answer is NONE... at least from the people that matter as regards 'resolution' of the case because to them it is already resolved.
