just cause in VFP you open a table that has 500 000 records doesn't mean that in .NET or in that case in VFP connecting to SQL server you will return that 500 000 records to the client

I think that's it. In the 1990s there were large FP discussions about "filtered datasets" against backends. FP people were used to doing a "use myHugeTable" without pulling every record across the wire, and expected SQL server to work similarly. I don't think this is a dotNET issue at all, it is a filtered dataset issue.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
