Just a thought on this: is it possible to access the data in the remote system through your main SQL application using either views or stored procedures ?

If you add a linked server with the correct authentication details, then you can use this as a gateway onto the remote system, just so long as all of your users are allowed to share the same security credentials to access the third party data.
