thanks keith,
as it happened whan all was said and done it left me with 500mb not the 270 it had originally said. i have now moved onto trying to install sql ce but thats not happening too easily and it was time to go home hours ago.

>>yes you may:) the physical drive is 30gb but only 5 is for the program files and os, nothing else is installed on c, now only xp and a couple of small programs. i did a custom install and removed sql express which even though i have specified d will only install on c, i also removed crystal, v# and c++. it will install now and leave me with a nice 270mb on c:) i am having a look at partition tools now that can recombine c and d.
