Get a better job
Start their own business with their own plan
Re-assess their priorities, Cable TV or health care?
Volunteer at a hospital so you meet a few doctors personally (friends helping friends)

There are many options without automatically going to the federal government. Health care is not a right.

The children can be taken care of via clinics or pro-bono work for major problems. There are numerous charities and groups to help out.

I'm not against a safety net. I feel it should be handled locally rather than by the federal government.
