Yet another suggestion -- create all possible columns, with a property for each column indicating what type of column it is -- then set the visible property for all columns depending on the type.

BTW, I have many instances of this, but I go about it in a completely different manner -- all my columns are created programmatically, and the method I call to do this first removes all existing columns and then adds back the columns only the columns I'm interested in.
