A poor example of humor Sam. Anyway, I was responding to the idea (which I totally agree with by the way) that it is better to teach someone to take care of themselves than to take care of them. In the long run they will be better and so will society. The problem is that education is not free in our country after highschool so not everyone has that opportunity unless by nature, they or their parents, are industrious. No other country provides the same opportunities as this country - I really believe it. However, those opportunities require that each individual strive independently to succeed. If they do no have or cannot get financing for higher education, then they must be industrious and committed to accomplish it without funds - which can be done. Slackers will never survive here - well survive maybe but not excel.

>>I see your point. Sounds like a good argument for a socialist government funded (free for all) higher education. Now the only question is how do we decide who gets training to be a Doctor and who gets training to be a Timber Cutter? I know - all of those who fail the MCAT can go to Cosmetology school! (Sorry, just couldn't resist!) :o)

>>>>>As for those who can't hack the 'dog-eat-dog' society. I feel zero sympathy. Make better choices in life. The world is full of 'challenged' individuals, be they mental, physical or sociological, who have had great success in their life. It is not luck, it is a matter of will and desire. If you can't hack it then maybe natural selection should run it's course.

I won't be judgmental, since I don't know you other than from what you say here, but if you approach people in real life with that attitude your funeral is going to be attended by about six people. Where's your compassion? One doesn't have to be a "bleeding heart liberal" to feel ordinary human compassion.

>>>Mike, don't take it as a cold and heartless statement.
>>>Think of you children. Would you want them to live depending on hand outs or would you want them to be a fighter and work hard to obtain what is necessary to live?

>>>Unfortunately, some in our society don't want to learn how to fish.
