>The ID is not numeric but a character. It could have a value of 0..9 but as a character, since user assigns those and they can be letters too. And the ID_FIELD is 10 char long so the entry can vary. That's why I wanted to pad with something "invisible" and make the two column "align."

Then, in this case, other than to put a fix font, I don't see how you could align as you wish.
