Thanks, Sergey. AFAIK I can change ReportPreview.app to add my buttons to the toolbar and use my new app for previewing reports.

You could do that, but the help topic describes a way of adding your own functionality to the toolbar (and menu) without having to recompile ReportPreview.App.
