I don't know that it's paranoia. The U.S. government has done such things before, notably the sinking of the Maine to provoke the Spanish-American War. There are also many who believe we had credible indications of the attack on Pearl Harbor and chose to ignore them so we could enter WW II. I'm not saying I necessarily believe that but neither do I consider it the feverish imagination of lunatics.
