If I remember correctly, "Behind the scene" VFP behaved like this when you issued a insert after... or insert before... command:
1. Copy the first xxx records to a temp table
2. Use this temp table
3. Append the desired number of records
4. Append the rest of the records from the old table
5. Delete the old table
6. Rename the temp table to the old table's name
7. Receate the indexes, if any
