We need enforcable ethics codes, yes - but the whole prinicile behind what the founders of our country had in mind was that doing this government work was something that you volunteered to do (for the good of the community), went and did it for a few years, then went back to your family and let the next guy go do it for a few years - not make a living doing it! That defeats the whole purpose of community service. Plus if you make a living at it (or have the ability to do so) the odds of corruption as MUCH higher.
