The biggest fear of gay marriages is probably not overzealous religious groups fearing the errosion of mankind, but in fact insurance companies fearing any two people could go get married and have all the legal rights (which includes insurance benefits) of a married couple. If your friend is sick - just marry him. Then your insurance can pay for his medical bills. If your friend is dying - just marry him. Then you can collect the inheritance. Of course the same thing has always been the case for people of the opposite sex. I know of a few couples who stayed married only so they could keep the insurance benefits of the other because one of them became seriously ill.

Wasn't this always so in our system? Just as there are frivolous lawsuits, there are frivolous (or bogus) marriages. All you said is true. There are also marriages arranged for immigration reasons. There are also laws against fraud, and in some of these cases, this is what these are. The issue here is bigotry and discrimination. If the marriage is a scam designed to milk insurance companies, then it's a fraud and should be prosecuted. That has nothing to do with the legal rights of all citizens to marry if they choose to do so. All loving couples should be able to marry, as long as they are consenting adults, regardless of race, creed, color, sexual orientation, etc.
