The reality is that in the majority of cases the law does not protect anyone in such a relationship. I think that it should not be an issue as to the relationship between "partners" and the state. They should be afforded the same rights as a married couple.

Why must this issue be tied to a “marriage license”? Just hire an attorney and draw up the necessary papers to have joint custody of the possessions that two partners own and how they will be divided. The state should honor such an arrangement.
