Hmm, if the network card in the Samba server is changed, it will get a different MAC address, and your licencing scheme will break (?)

The Samba server will have a unique (to that subnet) NetBIOS name (just like Windows servers do), which should not change regardless of any hardware changes. Might it not be more reliable to use that?
