Agreed. I am not big on "greatest ever" opinions but it's a great story. I have the 6 hour miniseries on DVD. (A word to the wise -- there is an abridged version floating around as well as the unabridged one).

>You didn't even reference Lonesome Dove! It's just the greatest western, if not the greatest movie, ever! Duvall will forever be Augustus McRae.

>>>Oh well, I guess that's why they make 31derful flavors. I didn't say he was the best actor, I just enjoy his movies. (Not so much that I would pay to see them). But, then again, I like Tom Cruise's movies too, and George Clooney. Robert Duvall is my current favorite actor.

>>He blows me away in every role he is in, going back to his earliest small parts. The parts got bigger, of course, and you can legitimately say he is our greatest living actor or actress. For your consideration: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000380/

>>There are so many others who come to mind, which is why I dislike "best of" discussions. But he has had one stellar career. And he's still going.

>>Everyone remembers his Marine colonel role in "Apocalypse Now" -- "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." For some reason the first thing I think of when I think of Robert Duvall, well, maybe alongside Tom Hagen, is from another military role: Lt. Col. Bull Meachum in "The Great Santini". The way he says "Oho!" is worth the price of admission by itself.

>>If you want to see him in a real sleeper, try to catch "True Confessions". He and Robert DeNiro play brothers who are a hardnosed cop and a priest, respectively. It is set in L.A. at the time of the Black Dahlia murder and their worlds wind up intersecting. Charles Durning has another key role and holds his own with Duvall and DeNiro. I loved the book and I loved the movie. Unfortunately, it has not yet come out on DVD. My understanding from a friend in the business is that in cases like this it always comes down to who holds the rights and what they are willing, or unwilling, to release to DVD. Evidently the legalities are quite a mess. If you ever get a chance, check it out.
