I changed it from Style 0 DropDown Combo to Style 2 DropDown List. There is no such problem in 9 with either setting. I don't have 6 to confirm your findings, sorry.

There are benefits in 9 for both programmers and users. Once you get used to 9 you regret being dropped into a project using 6.

There's no universal agreement on anything. There are bugs fixed in every version of VFP.
