Sure, that's why I didn't assert that he is Jewish - I wasn't sure. However, his other well-known characters are Ali G, where he poses as "semi-black" or of mixed race, or 'Brüno', a gay Austrian fashion correspondent. Here the Sasha Baren Cohen handle has no signifance to the role or how he's perceived.

However, he is from an orthodox jewish family:

I don't know how much of the Borat TV show you see over there but he definitely gives his victims enough rope with which to hang themselves, or just make Kasakhstanis appear as very gauche, primitive, crude and bigoted. If anything he's culpable of dissing Kasakhstan, but not jews.

Incidentally, it's interesting to note that both Baron Cohen and Ricky Gervais (who wrote and starred in "The Office") are the most notable of people from "The 11 O'clock show" on UK Channel 4 who went on to become big stars. This, unlike your star-spawning Saturday Night Show was a small-budget, small audience, obscure show, on at a toime when few were watching, and didn't do more that 2-3 short series.

>I don't know if that is necessarily true. Some people, no matter their background, will do anything for a buck or fame. It doesn't necessarily reflect on their family, ancestry, or religion. Also, I had a teacher once who said the test of a true actor was whether he/she was able to convince the public when they played a role which they really despised on moral or religious grounds.

>>>After bush won his 2nd term and I was kind of bummed, the one thing that cheered me up was Bill Moyers PBS program. He had a nun on talking about the fundamentalists. Her comment was "these are not my christians".
>>>
>>>I was just reading an interview with the guy who plays "Borat" and is generating so much controversy. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I now he makes a lot of anti-Semitic comments. Such as going into a gun store and asking what gun is prefered to go jew hunting. In the interview he states he does it to get people to show their prejudices. Unfortunately, a very easy thing to do.

>>Like where he gets up, in a stetson and stars & stripes shirt, in an "opry", and gets all the red necks to sing "Throw the jew down the well". Now, Borat's real name is Sasha Cohen. From that you can draw your own conclusions as to whether he is anti-semitic.
