I checked the WMP setting and it specifies that .MID types should be played. I can't find the settings of the quicktime. But quicktime plays .MID files, if enabled. I think it is something to do with how Windows have the file association where you can specify what file extension uses what application. So the same setting could be in the IE but I can't find it.
