Never as fast as a disk drive, but more portable... Anyway, I'd say it depends also on the type of access you do. Lookup seems fairly fast, but continuous reading is slow.

Something you might take in consideration, depending on the usage you plan, is the connector accesibility. I tend to prefer pen-style USB drives because other formats are sometimes difficult to connect in some computers (because some vendors put the sockets deep into some irregular depressions with no much room...)
