Ok, let's ignore question #2 below. I have entered the dropdownlist items via the EditItem Template, DropDownList smart tag "Edit Items...". This works.

What does not work, and I think has nothing to do with the template dropdownlist, is question # 1 below. Whereby no matter which row I edit, any fields updated are posted to the first row. If this worked as expected then I would have little need for an answer to question #3.
