From my electronics engineering days, I can recall that there are many types of rechargeable batteries each with some difference. A few rechargeable batteries can be “deep discharged”, such as Gel Cells, while most Nicads should be run down near the point of discharge.

Gel Cells recover from total discharge while Nicads do not. Nicads (some types) have a memory and can only be charged/discharged to a specific point dependant upon use. That is if your have a battery that should last for two hours and you use it for one hour and then recharge it then you will only have one hour total use from that battery.

I am sure that there are many new types of batteries on the market that I have not researched. In is best to use manufacturers recommendations.
